Welcome to First Grade Reading!
Students entering first grade should be on a reading level C, to be considered on grade level. By the end of the year students need to be on a reading level I. This being said, first graders have a lot of levels to work through to leave ready for second grade!
To help your student with their reading progress, please have them complete their reading homework every night. If your student has problems reading the assigned story, please feel free to assist them. Students should also be reading for a minimum of 20 minutes every night. I know in the beginning of the year, it can be hard finding books that your student will be able to read. If you need books on your student's reading level please feel free to stop by my room and I will gladly let you borrow some!
First grade also participates in the Accelerated Reader program. This program allows your students to read books on the Accelerated Reader list, and then take quizzes online to help them with their story comprehension skills! First grade students are asked to have 35 AR points by the end of the year. This is approximately 70 books/quizzes. If you need your student's username or password, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Every couple weeks, we will be working on a new list of sight words. I will send home a paper copy of the list and also have an updated list here on my webpage for your convenience.
I'm excited to read with your student. It's going to be a great year!
